We are going to be taking a little break next week (mostly to catch up on shelter magazines and Breaking Bad), so wanted to say HAPPY NEW YEAR too. Striped wallpaper went up last night.* I love them even more than I thought I would. Starting the black stripe at the top seems to make the room taller and the horizontal placement makes the room feel bigger. It is like I'm living in a 500 sq ft palace.

In other news, I decided to makeover this tray because the three other patterns weren't enough. Will show your the afters if/when I finish the revamp!

*For the record, I don't recommend wallpapering at night in a room that lacks a proper overhead light.

Get a Jump on It

I try to avoid things that seem too trendy (unless they are animal print related...or birds. Wait, or stripes, or anything Moroccan. Oh, or faux furry or vampirey). [Side note: Notice I didn't say wallpaper because it is a proven CLASSIC!] But, how can I not get on board with Pantone's color for 2012, Tango Tangerine? Especially when it is right at my ferm finger tips. Let's start things off with a triangle of tangerine on one of my favorite pillows!
How about we butter up some toast on this orange buttering board? Sound good? So technically, you're right, it is more of a fiesta orange than a tango tangerine. But, no biggie, it is still bright, energetic, feeling positive, feeling employable, and will make your 2012 extra toasty!
Light it up, 2012!
Just a spot of tea? Just a spot of tangerine. So now, orange you glad it is almost the weekend? JOKE. But, really, aren't you so glad it is almost the weekend? Me too!

I hope you enjoyed your extra hour of sunshine yesterday. I spent mine bundled up in bed (my heater isn't working, so that was my excuse) with my new Belle mag (and then catching up on Boardwalk Empire - yes!). Why are the Australian's so dead on with design? Don't you just love that marbled textile thing that is happening in their Right Now trend section?

Another Right Now design item? What do you know, it is our Tower of Rings! Also did you know they make the Le Corbursier chair in outdoor fabric now? Me neither. Something to keep in mind for when I have 1) more money and 2) and outdoor seating area... In the meantime, I'll be considering whether to get those pretty napkin rings :)

Circus inspired decor is here! Which is good, because I like stripes. I also like the looks of that Circus book.

Oh yeah, velo bicyle pillow anyone? You know, I never really put the velo bicycle together with the circus. I guess I never get past thinking about how quickly I would injure myself if I tried to ride one to connect it to clowns. I actually have the tea towel because I love the graphic, so it is good to know I'm right on circus trend. Phew!

Have you seen the newest issue of California Home and Design? SO GOOD, and I don't know when they started their online edition, but it makes me very happy because basically that is one more thing I can do on my iPad besides watching HBOGO. What also makes me very happy is seeing the way Vanessa De Vargas of Turquoise used our Family Tree Wallpaper in this bedroom. I just adore it with that pretty pink bedspread. So fun to be on Oh Joy's blog today! Read about my stripes love right here. Note the touch of Ferm Living - as you might have noticed, you can't walk very few square feet in my apartment without running in to some Ferm, that is just the way it goes luckily! Unfortunately, we not longer carry that particular pillow. So sad. You know what they say about what happens when you snooze... Well, after the 5th snooze, anyway, you end up not making it again to your 7:00 yoga class that you promised yourself this time you would really make it to and start your morning feeling kind of like a loser? A well rested, happy loser, but still. Or, you lose out on a really pretty pillow?

Inspired by their post, I actually added a little more metallic in my kitchen with Angles wallpaper by Erica Wakerly to complement my gold tree bomb thermo mugs. Nothing like some double stick tape and an hour to kill to get the wallpaper juices flowing!

One way I like to spend my time "working" is by heading over to to look for pretty wallpaper images. When my work is really focused, I search specifically for Ferm Living pins. I know, I'm a diligent employee. Here's what I've bumped in to recently. LOVE the Rush Hour in this boy's room. The pillows are equally clever. Great styling!

The Dotty wallpaper here is equally adorable. I like how the crib was wallpapered as well. Such a thoughtful detail!

This is also ridiculously cute. The Scandinavian child's version of Out of Africa, or something? I just watched that again recently which is why I said that, just so you know.

So this is post is going to be an update on Holly's Decorate Book tour... Get it? In a nutshell, the book is a must purchase situation, and Holly's as fabulous as you'd expect! It was such a treat to finally meet her in person. Here she is at the Anthropologie book tour in SF chatting about mood boards. Sitting there I wondered why have I never made a mood board? Laziness? Most likely. I'm almost motivated to give it a whirl though. Seems like a good way to avoid serious decor missteps...

Halfway through Holly's mood board demo something clever caught my eye. Can you see it?

Give up? It's our Studio 3. What a coincidence! Except, well, not really... I mean who wouldn't want one of those on their mood board after all. This one was featured in a German decor mag from what I can tell.

Here's the guest of honor signing books.

After I got my book signed, I realized that the only people I knew there were still in line. I started to feel beyond awkward just standing there waiting so decided to take a spin around the store which is when I bumped into my future boots. The short, clog ones. Aren't they superb? Oh, that's right, you can't tell because I have not mastered taking iPhone photos.

I didn't get the boots then. But... I just got this adorable "birthday card" from Anthropologie (very thoughtful of them, no?) which has me thinking that what's in the stars for me are those boots.

Something else that is in the stars for me, is this coffee table. It is being delivered today! Interestingly enough, the story behind this purchase was one of fate. In that, I found it on One King's Lane killing time while my coffee was brewing and managed to snag it before some other less lucky shopper! Honestly though, I'd been looking for a large glass/acrylic (reasonably priced) coffee table for weeks to no avail and then this perfect piece popped up! Yeah, definitely written in the stars...

Labor Day Reading

Just wanted to share with you my new very favorite book, Moderne: Fashioning the French Interior, by Sarah Schleuning. If you love pattern, interior design, the roaring twenties, and/or France, I promise you won't be sad if you buy Moderne. It contains a collection of over 200 plates drawn by famous interior designers in France during the 1920's. Before color photography, their renderings still capture luxurious textures, deep jewel tones and mixes of pattern that seem so fresh and new to me. I can't get over some of them. They are just too good!

I first saw Moderne at Paul Smith in Paris in 2009. A few weeks ago, I was hunting down this picture that I took there, because it is going to be the inspiration for my very first commissioned painting I'm getting for my new apartment. Doesn't that sound so adult of me? It isn't actually, because a more responsible adult would actually save their money :) But, I get a kick out of saying "commissioned" because I'm not the type of person that would ever use that word with any seriousness and yet, I guess, that is sort of what I am doing. A very talented artist friend of mine actually generously agreed to help me add some color to my place in the form of huge roses. Inspired by Moderne, I think I shall call this having a painting "fashioned." Now that sounds tres chic. Anyway, I've been dreaming about this accent wall ever since I saw it and figured if I've loved it for two years, I'll surely love it for a lifetime. That's the hope. Because it is going to be, well, very noticeable in both size (huge) and color (bright pink)...

Back to the book. So, as I was hunting for that roses photo, I stumbled across this quick snapshot I'd taken of Moderne and was reminded that myself two years ago really wanted to buy it. I couldn't remember why, but myself two years later thought I'd probably had a good idea back then, so shouldn't wait any longer...

Moderne arrived last week, and this morning was just the right time to laze in bed and crack it open. WOOOAH. This image made me giddy. The colors, the shapes - it is a pattern perfection. And, this was only the first plate. From there till the last page it just didn't stop.

Hello gorgeous red screen! What is that beautiful rug/blanket hanging over the balcony, and why don't I live in a two story apartment (palace) with a balcony so I can do that too? Also, this feels a little pre-color blocking, color blocking, no? I dig it all. I'm really wishing I could go Midnight in Paris on this place and have a visit with whoever used to live here. No doubt they'd serve delightful cocktails as we discussed important things like cinema and jazz.

Don't these wallpaper designs feel completely current? Or maybe it is just that contemporary design has been revisiting the past more and more lately? Or maybe they are in reproduction and that is why they seem so familiar? Birds and gold fish are two things that I will always love to see in decor no matter how trendy they may or may not be. Seeing them from the 1920s like this reinforces just how timeless they really are.

Ummmmm, this room is to die for. Please note big rosy rug. More proof that large pink roses are classic, right? Or at least that is how I am interpreting this picture due to the impending painting situation. The floral pouf here is, for lack of a better word, amazing. What I love about seeing rooms like this that are drawn rather than photographed is that so much is still left to the imagination and open for individual interpretation and inspiration. For example, what is that pouf made out of - wool, tapestry, linen? Is the wall covered in paper or fabric? Is the green chair velvet or leather? Who's to say? They can be whatever we want them to be!

I don't know who's invited me or what is being served, but, yes please, I will be at this dinner party in a heartbeat. Does anything beat mixing graphic black and white with bright color and bold pattern? Didn't think so.

That light fixture is insane. Look, even the children seem to have fainted from its greatness. They could also be in awe, like me, of the rug/wallpaper combo. That is how you fashion a room up right!

I would almost never opt for browns over grays, and I don't love purple all that much. But, I would happily eat, work and sleep in this cozy nook until I was forcibly removed.

Finally, I don't even have the words for how fantastic this space is. I know I'm biased, but isn't it ALL about the wallpaper sometimes? :) You just can't go wrong with it. Happy reading!

A Sprinkling of Ferm

red Roman Shades that I recently made. Oh, and if you do happen to stop by for cocktails or something, please don't try to open or close them. They have about a 95% fail rate. DIYing things sure can be challenging sometimes for those without the ability to pay close attention to detail.

Like Mother, Like Daughter

My mom came to visit a couple weeks ago and we ended up doing dishes late night at which time I convinced her to wear this never before worn sexy apron (because, as I've mentioned before, I don't cook). She's rockin' it, I think! And check out those sexy tea towels in the background...

When she saw some of my Ferm Living goodies, she correctly decided that she needed some too. Here's one of my favorite Ferm Living pillows in my bedroom.

Fall Fabulousness: New, New, New!

Hooray, Ferm Living just released it's new catalog for Fall! Beyond the stunning photography and styling (in my opinion) there are a bunch of gorgeous new items that I'm thrilled to share with you. Let's start with the wool pouf above. In a world of poufs this one has got to be one of the most eye catching and original!

New tea towels. Can a person have too many tea towels? I ask this because I have, well, a lot and now I might need just one more...

A sweet little tea pot. It fits into this bowl, which is a great feature. Keep you biscuits underneath for a thoughtful presentation next time you have a friend for tea.

3. Thermo mugs for me and my friends. I find they make the best presents because they are not only pretty and nice to hold, but them come in really fun packaging so you don't have to wrap them...bonus.

I was working on a bit of a tedious task yesterday, which is why I was extra grateful for my twitter friends to break up the day. For example, we received a link to this USA Today video which features Twitter Co-Founder, Jack Dorsey, talking about his new company Square. And, in the background is our Remix Wallpaper. Doesn't it look great on TV? :) I also like that he is sitting on a chesterfield. A smart man, with great taste in decor - what a catch!

We also got a link to this article on Refinery 29 featuring Anthology's Editor in Chief, Anh-Minh Le, talking about her beautiful home. Her Feather Wallpaper caught our eye.

So did her closet of shoes. I'm jealous for 3 particular reasons - 1) selection of shoes; 2) size of shoes; and 3) organization...

Other than checking twitter constantly, another thing I did yesterday was to book tickets to go sit on this terrace. I can't wait!

Creative Conference

It starts today in San Francisco! Which is good timing, since I just finished putting together the slides for my panel this morning. Nothing like a deadline for motivation... I'll be speaking with Shayna of Pattern Pulp. Am excited to meet her and hear all about what they do.

Think I'll begin by chatting about how we got started with Ferm Living Shop oh so long ago!
It actually all began with this chair. It is a long story. Don't worry, I'll just be hitting the highlights at the conference. I only discuss the more boring details over drinks.

Mostly, I'll be talking about PATTERNS! The good, the bad, the best. Staying on trend, creating a classic, uniquely loved vs universally accepted.

What inspires them, why I am obsessed with them, etc. There will be a lot of great speakers over the weekend that I'm looking forward to learning from. Definitely check it out. Here's the schedule. Happy Weekend!

Ham Night

My lovely parents came to stay with me this past weekend, so I figured what better way to jump start their visit than by inviting some friends over for ham, right? An obvious choice. To start off ham night right, there a few things to buy - fresh flowers, cheese and pasta.

Also, gin of the plastic bottle variety and limes. Their visit was also a good excuse to break in my new Ferm Living cutting boards. Aren't they fantastic? :) Here's the littlest one awaiting some lime slicing.

I ran into a friend on the bus one day, and she raved about the Honey Baked Home store in my neighborhood. I was intrigued, as it didn't look particularly inviting from the outside. Much to my delight, the ham was delicious and it all worked out okay!

We were so happy to see our new cutting boards in Elle Decor UK last month. I'm quite smitten with them and just got a couple from my kitchen in the hopes it will motivate me to cook (or at least chop). Chop bloody mary garnish, a the very least. By the way, what is a better way to spend an afternoon than with European shelter magazines and a cocktail?

Okay, maybe riding a bike is? Something else that is making me happy is riding my new bicycle around the city. It is such a pretty green, no? And, yes, I chose the color based on whether it would work with my leopard helmet. It is leaning against what is about to become a wallpapered accent wall. More on that later... I also installed that birdie chandelier and was delighted/dumbfounded that all the bulbs worked. Although I know there's a scientific explanation, it felt like a miracle.

Thought I'd include this shot too, because that happens to be my wonderful uncle that I miss very much. I never got to meet my grandpa but based on his two sons, I know I would have liked him a lot. What a fun surprise to bump into our Apple Tree Tea Towel at the de Young gift shop over the weekend. I'd always suspected it was fine art.

After perusing through the museum, we took in some brass band sounds at the pavilion close by. Did you know this band plays for free every Sunday in Golden Gate Park and has been doing so since 1882? Pretty incredible. I'm planning on spending many more (*sunny) Sundays strolling around the park. Hope to see you there!

A Week in the Life: Thermo Mug

I took my new tree bomb thermo mug for a test drive last week. Here's the lowdown. It works great for sipping coffee in the sun on a Monday morning!

It keeps white wine at a nice cool temperature while you're working on your laptop and watching DWTS results show. Fits on the key board perfectly. Sure, it isn't the most elegant option for serious white wine drinkers, but pretty much fail proof for the multi-taskers out there.

Works equally well for red wine at room temp. A no brainer.

Now that is some serious 24 carrot juice!

I feel like my thermo mug would have kept my Friday night's pina colada frozen for longer than this coconut contraption, but didn't actually test that theory. Of course, I wanted to, but it just seemed a little too awkward. (Note to self re the Tonga Room: once is enough.)

Saturday morning's diet coke was kept refreshingly cold which helped energize after the previous pina colada party. (How cute is that bottle, by the way?)

In an attempt to be extra healthy on Sunday, I tried drinking something epically nourishing. But, here's the thing. Nothing can make those super greens taste better or look prettier. The thermo mug gave it it's very best shot though, I think!

Saturday Night Brights

I actually love it when I have an excuse to stay in on a Saturday night, eat take out and watch HGTV. So, I was extra thrilled to see Emily's tweet on Saturday morning hinting that Ferm Living might be on Secrets of a Stylist that night! Emily used our gold branches to help transform a bachelor pad into chicer space for two! We adore how it turned out. We also were happy when they noted how easy it was to put the wall sticker up. According to my (mental) notes, I believe the exact phrasing was: "that was so easy!"

Here's the mood board Emily created for the room. I spy some ribbed wallpaper in black/beige! The room looked so fabulous - lots of neutrals and texture with bright hits of yellow (and gold, of course). We'll post more when the video goes up on hgtv.com. So fun!

Counting Feathers

Was leafing through the new Dwell Magazine after my yoga class in the Whole Foods checkout line buying sushi and almost spit up my Kombucha when I saw...

Ferm Living's cork coaster! So very cool. By the way, I completely realize how annoyingly "Stuff White People Like" that sentence above sounded. It was too classic to take out - I can't believe those elements came together so perfectly. It's a good thing I wasn't wearing New Balance. Don't worry, I'm anything but that, I (almost) swear! To prove it, let me just say when I got home, I stuffed down some pepperoni slices, spinach dip and hint of lime Tostitos while watching Dancing with the Stars. Can we talk about that for a second? Kendra stayed? So, so wrong.

Dwell Magazine featured 100 kitchens - so many gorgeous ones; so much inspiration! Here's my favorite. I'd love to belly up to that counter seated on one of those beautiful stools and ask the owners all about their lives in Finland. Don't they look to be full of stories and life lessons? I bet they cook together and that they are both really good at it.

I went to visit my friend Rachel at her lovely home in the North Bay last week. Isn't it so charming and pretty? I stopped by to catch up over lunch and help her wallpaper her nursery!

She'd left a note for me in the entry way. I'm going to start doing this - so sweet and unexpected.

That her entry way features some of our wallpaper (birds on branches) was also a bonus.

One of the many reasons she fell for her husband was his great taste in art as evidenced by this fantastic painting...

Decorate

So...I had to kill a little time between a meeting and happy hour yesterday, and figured what better way to do this than a stroll around Anthropologie. I was so excited to see the Decorate book there, written by Holly Becker of decor8 and Joanna Copestick, since I've been hearing such great things about it!

It did not disappoint. Not one bit! I loved the photography, mix of interiors and the many inspiring wallpaper applications throughout! My favorite thing? Of course, spying some Ferm Living pillows on the pages. What a fantastic surprise. Above are our velo, bird cage and tree bomb pillows sitting so pretty!

Now, this room is perfection. And, I'm not just saying that because I see a couple more ferm living pillows :) The chair, the rug, my favorite lighting in the world. It is too good. Too good!

This little DIY vase also caught my attention. I love the use of silver sequins with a freshly cut, soft pink rose - reminds me of Morocco! (All images from Decorate.)

An Oldie But Goodie

That's right. It is a "night light" of sorts illuminating our beautiful forest flower wallpaper. I just bumped into this picture in an old email file. I'm not sure if it was ever published with copy, but it was going to be used in an advertisement. I was always so curious to see how it turned out. Did it increase sales? Am thinking, yes. Phew, we just finished up transferring our web shop to a new platform and uploading all of our new things for Spring! We're hoping this site will be a smoother to navigate, and it'll be a lot easier to manage on our end. When we first started selling Ferm Living in 2007 there were only about 40 products, and now there are over 300!

Uploading and Taking Deep Breaths

We've been in the process of transferring Ferm Living Shop over to a new platform over the past few days, as well as uploading all our new things for spring. I really don't understand how websites work. It is quite complicated. Hopefully this explains why I feel like I have lost my mind. It'll be worth it though! For example, check out the gorgeousness of these new pillows. This is the picture for our new home page, by the way. I just love the simplicity of it - pure white windows and walls, and those modern, graphic pillows mixed with a vintage, ethnic wool rug. Ahhh, breathing it in!

I was just playing around on mydeco and put together this moodboard for my new living room. Granted, I don't actually know what the living room is going to look like since I haven't found it yet (I've just started my SF apartment hunt!), but why not be prepared. I'll probably add a touch of color into the space, but at the moment, I'm really feeling blacks, grays, whites, and metallics with wood, leather and wool. The necklace picture is taken from a Cartier book, and I'm planning on turning it into a big piece of art. That's my dream Beni Ourain up in the corner - hoping that someone in Morocco can find me one just like it. I've included my favorite ferm LIVING accessories, and the wallpaper is launching next month from our sister site Hygge & West! So... now that my 500th post has come and gone, I'm off to celebrate (and/or go to the grocery store...).

Meet Jack! He's the sweet little baby boy of one of our blogger friends, Maria Fe, at Layers of Meaning.

She recently put up our wilderness wallpaper in gold in her son's nursery, and we think it looks so beautiful!

Tree Bomb Backdrop

We LOVE this cozy study nook at the end of Lara's hallway! So pretty, and what a creative use of extra space! She used our Tree Bomb wallpaper to add in a more natural feel and work with the wood ceiling. Such a nice mix of materials!

Atlas Seating

Just downloaded some pictures from a couple trips I recently took up to the Atlas Mountains and realized I have a thing for empty seating. (Or I have no friends, who can tell? :) I love how this simple canvas chair pops against the tile, and yes, the mountains don't make it any uglier.

And, I'm becoming obsessed with low, lounge type dining. Having a view is also a bonus. But, being able to eat and then nap without excusing oneself from the table has a lot of appeal. Has anyone seen this type of seating done in a modern interior. I feel like you'd have to keep the rest of the room low? But, maybe not? Might be worth trying to pull off in my next place...

Snow and Paul

It has been a rainy few days here in Marrakesh. Am regretting not packing more sweaters or a rain jacket. On the bright side, don't the Atlas Mountains look gorgeous?

In an equal attempt at brightsiding the weather, I most happily discovered that a Paul recently opened here. Few things are better to lift cloudy weather spirits than unexpected freshly baked Parisian breads.

In design related news, I've decided this is my favorite Moroccan tile pattern. Of course, this decision might have been influenced by it being found in what was possibly the greatest shower I've ever taken. I wish I could just rent the bathroom space here. I'd be perfectly content to sleep in the bathtub. Anyway, wouldn't that make a pretty wallpaper? I'm not usually an earth tones person, but there something about the subtle, warm mix of colors that I just adore.

Speaking of handmade, does anyone know where I can find a knitting pattern similar to this hat? I was trying to be good and not spend money, but argh, I love this hat. I'm having non-buyer's regret.

Pre-Rare Device party, I stopped by another book launch for Leslie Williamson's Handcrafted Modern book. It is GORGEOUS and a fascinating look inside the homes of some true design icons.

Earlier that day... I bought the last one of these at Tartine Bakery. Zero regrets there!

Meet Fife, one of my SF housemates. He is ridiculously cute and such a good little boy.

Feather wallpaper went up in a bathroom project I worked on. It looked terrific.

And, it matched my feather henna tattoo from my friends' wedding over the weekend. Bonus.

Friendly coffees from the French Hotel are the perfect way to start the day!

Last time I was in SF, I put up some Tree Bomb in Purple/Gold in this guest bathroom. I wish the pictures had turned out better, because I promise it looks amazing. Small spaces with wallpaper on all four walls is where it is at. Anyway, I'm reminded of this project because I'm heading back to the bay today (yay!) and have two more wallpaper projects at the top (okay, maybe middle) of the agenda. Fun to bump into this old lamp project I did for DIY Magazine on Apartment Therapy last week. At first I thought someone else had used the same fir tree wallpaper to line the inside of a lampshade, but then I realized, oh, I did that! Those curtains brought over for the shoot really threw me for a loop. I'm not a big curtain person, because it seems so hard to pick the right ones. Much better to stick to wallpaper, where you can't go wrong, I say!

How ravishing is this dining room?? We were so excited to get these pictures from a customer, Mike, who put up the silver forest flower wallpaper in his dining room. The room looks so luxurious and chic. The perfect place for a dinner party!
